Provenge Treatment
Provenge treatment is a type of cellular immunotherapy to treat patients with advanced prostate cancer. Provenge treatment works differently from other cancer treatments such as hormone therapy and chemotherapy because Provenge is personalized for each patient.
Provenge treatment works by using the patient’s own immune system to find and target prostate cancer cells in the body. It also helps your body remember what prostate cancer cells look like so your immune system can help to keep your prostate cancer under control.
Provenge treatment has been approved for patients with advanced and metastatic prostate cancer. It’s been approved by the FDA, and it’s been shown to help those living with mCRPC live longer lives compared to those who didn’t receive Provenge treatment.
What are the Benefits of Provenge Treatment?
Since the FDA’s approval of Provenge treatment in 2010, up to 40,000 patients living with advanced or metastatic prostate cancer have received Provenge. In those with metastatic prostate cancer, studies have shown that patients live longer with a reduced risk of death by 22.5%.
Additionally, compared to other cancer treatment options, Provenge treatment has minimal side effects that only last between one to two days. To limit out-of-pocket costs for Provenge treatment, the North Georgia Urology Center uses the assistance of a patient care coordinator to secure funding from cancer foundations.
What Does Provenge Treatment Involve?
Prior to treatment, the patient will undergo a procedure called leukapheresis in which the patient’s immune cells are collected. These immune cells are grown in a lab in the presence of a protein. This protein helps the patient’s immune cells recognize prostate cancer.
Three days after the cell collection procedure, the patient will undergo Provenge immunotherapy treatment. This treatment is given over the course of a month and involves three intravenous infusions once every two weeks. Appointments take approximately two hours. Our Provenge therapy treatment is all performed in-house at North Georgia Urology Center.
